National Day
Africa Day, which all African states celebrate on May 25, symbolizes African unity. The creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), in Addis Ababa in 1963, aims to allow Africa to express itself collectively on the international scene and to play a primordial role in the fight for freedom and for the emergence of a collective African identity.
It has established itself as a key player in the resolution of conflicts on the continent. African unity is based on the shared vision of a united and strong Africa, and on the need to build a partnership between governments and all layers of civil society, in order to strengthen solidarity and cohesion between African people.
In addition, the OAU Charter includes among its objectives the contribution to the liberation of African countries which still suffer the yoke of colonialism and apartheid.
Africa aspires, through the Pan-African organization, to the establishment of sovereign equality of all African States, to respect for existing borders at the time of independence, to the participation of African people in the activities of the Organization, to the peaceful settlement of conflicts between OAU Member States and to the promotion of social justice.
An organization with a continental vocation, the OAU works to promote peace, security and stability on the continent.
