Craftsmanship
The particularity of craftsmanship is based on the satisfaction of personal needs from local raw materials such as leather, wool and wood.
More than any other, Saharan craftsmanship is characterized by the creation of clothing effects and domestic objects which respond through their utility, their lightness and their exchange value to the needs of the inhabitants of this immense desert region.
The camel driver's saddle, tarih for men, takhaouit for women, is the perfect type.
Made from an assembly of three species of wood (tehouneh, oleander, tabrakat) covered with leathers of different colors, thus forming a happy mosaic, this saddle is secured to the back of the mehari using the haif from which pompoms hang, the tidarsiouine.
Without this object, long hikes in the desert would not be possible or very uncomfortable for trekkers.
Lightweight, this saddle has the effect of being gentle on the mount.
It also has exchange value both through the materials that go into its production and through the colors of the leather and the embroidery that enhances it.
Finally, it is an external sign of wealth and pride to which the spirit of the nomad is attached.
