20th Anniversary of the United Nations
Year of international cooperation
The philosopher and politician Edmund Burke (1729-1797) stated in the 18th century: “Those who do not act in concert cannot act fruitfully; those who do not act in trust cannot act in concert; cannot act with confidence those who are not bound by common opinions, common affections and common interests.
This quote reveals the extreme importance of international cooperation in areas which involve the future of all humanity and which it is doubtful that a single State, however powerful it may be, can aspire to resolve alone.
During its 17th session, on December 19, 1962, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution relating to the establishment of a year of international cooperation.
On November 21, 1963, a resolution designating the year 1965 – 20th anniversary of the UN – Year of International Cooperation (ICA) was adopted. The postal administrations of the Member States were asked to issue a series of stamps commemorating the anniversary of the UN and the Year of International Cooperation.
