Jewelry from Greater Kabylia
Born from a need, that of meeting the demands of daily life, Kabyle craftsmanship has never lost its social value despite the modernization of the way of life.
Pottery, jewelry and weaving remain strongly present as symbols of cultural attachment. Pottery remains the most varied, because it involves very practical objects (jugs, jars, dishes, ladles, spoons, pots, etc.) which have the same constants: robustness, watertightness and functionality.
Generally ocher in color (that of terracotta), Kabyle handicraft products are decorated with simple patterns formed of triangles and diamonds, in shimmering colors, brown in the region of Tizi Ouzou and red in that of Béjaïa.
Since independence, weaving has been reduced to the manufacture of burnous and carpets, the most famous of which is made in the village of Ath Hichem. The diversity of colors, with a predominance of red, characterizes Kabyle carpets, which are rarely single-colored.
Jewelry, the human activity par excellence, has an established reputation that has long gone beyond our borders. Sometimes true works of art with sumptuous pieces, the jewelry is varied, made of silver planes and cloisonné enamels with silver wire and set with coral.
