30th Anniversary of Algerian Muslim Scouts
Thirtieth anniversary of Algerian Muslim Scouts and 7th Arab Jamboree
The founding of the Algerian Muslim Scouts dates back to 1935 with the birth of the first El Falah group in Algiers. At the initiative of Mohamed Bouras, this momentum responded to the establishment by the settlers of the first scout movement, imitating the French scout movement, which appeared in Algeria at the end of the First World War.
The first SMA groups appeared in some Algerian cities, such as Miliana, Oran and Tlemcen, before being unified under the Federation of Algerian Muslim Scouts in July 1939 under the presidency of Sheikh Abdelhamid Ben Badis.
The SMAs set themselves the task of training and educating young people according to Algerian values. SMA leaders, in their educational action, applied the universal principles of world scouting while adapting them to the cultural, linguistic, economic and political realities of the country.
The SMA congresses, notably that of 1947 held in Sidi Fredj, affirmed the nationalist orientation of the movement as well as the attachment of the scouts to the homeland and the moral values of the Muslim religion. The contribution of the SMA to the national awareness of young people is indisputable. Many former scouts have joined the ranks of the ALN and several are counted among the glorious martyrs of the War of National Liberation.
SMAs are recognized by world scouting and are members of the Arab Scouting Bureau. In this year 1966, the organization of the 7th Arab Jamboree will fall for the first time to Algeria.
