National Day
In 1966, Algeria officially commemorated the 10th anniversary of Mujahid Day. A symbol for the revolutionary family and a national pride for the entire Algerian people and the Arab nation, this day of August 20 corresponds to a double anniversary: that of the generalized offensive against the colonial occupation army in 1955 carried out under the command of Zighoud Youcef in North Constantine and the holding of the historic congress of the Soummam in 1956 in the village of Ifri Ouzellaguen.
Nine months after the outbreak of the liberation struggle, Zighoud Youcef and his comrades-in-arms managed, after preparation of barely three months, to demonstrate to the colonial administration and international opinion the popular character of the Revolution.
That day, the populations of the villages and douars, supervised by the leaders of the region, gave the Revolution a new strategic turning point which consisted of establishing the revolutionary fight on popular ground and making it known internationally.
Both objectives were achieved. A year later, at the end of the meeting of August 20, 1956, revolutionary Algeria was provided with a platform defining the goals of the armed uprising, the division of the national territory into six wilayas, the conditions of the ceasefire and the negotiations decisive for peace with the one and only representative of the people the National Liberation Front.
An extraordinary meeting which put Algeria on the inevitable path to independence after more than 130 years of French domination and outlined the contours of the future sovereign Algerian state. The Soummam Congress transcended the historical context which saw it born to become an event of great national political significance.
