The colonial town was first named 'Port de France' then 'Philippeville' in homage to the French king 'Louis Philippe'.
Renamed after independence, it took the name Skikda. It continued to grow to now become the second lung of the country thanks to the port complex comprising two commercial ports including one specialized for hydrocarbons: The Mixed Port or Old Port and the Skikda El-Djédid Port or New Port.
