20th anniversary of UNESCO
Unique in the universality conferred upon it by its status as a non-governmental organization open to all nations, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) takes the essence of its meaning in the promotion of peace in the world through education, exact, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information.
It was on November 16, 1945 that the convention creating a United Nations organization for education, science and culture was adopted by the London Conference. It did not come into force until November 4, 1946 when 20 states ratified it.
In 1966, the intergovernmental organization had 122 member states working, through large-scale actions, to respond to the desire of Third World countries to emerge from underdevelopment. The 20th anniversary of UNESCO celebrated this November 1966 was an opportunity to recall the birth of the principles of cultural cooperation which emphasize knowledge, considered the key to achieving peace, and underlines the importance of each culture as an element of the heritage of humanity.
Each individual who wishes not to confine himself specifically to his own environment can enjoy any other cultural universe. Algeria joined UNESCO on October 15, 1962. The UN organization responsible for education and culture took an active part in Algeria's first development programs.
Especially since our country is engaged in a literacy strategy which aims to fill the serious deficiencies in this area, due to a high rate of illiteracy inherited from the colonial period, which was estimated at 85% in 1962. With its experience in the field of education, seen as an element of peace and development, UNESCO can only favor this type of program.
