Strictly African, the ostrich was quite common in the Algerian Sahara around 1850, but excessive hunting destroyed it.
Today, we only find them in large quantities in Mauritania.
But throughout the central Sahara, we find abundant remains of egg shells, the only remains of this bird which is endangered and which is no longer reported very rarely.
