Winter Olympic Games, Grenoble (France)
Winter sports, a very recent practice, were only recognized as an Olympic competition in 1924, when only the Nordic disciplines appeared on the program. The growth of mountaineering, the improvement of equipment and the development of leisure policy have enabled a large number of people, especially young people, to discover the mountain with all its joys.
The development of tourism and the establishment of winter holidays, by promoting the modernization of equipment in mountain resorts, in particular by the multiplication of cable cars and ski lifts, have given, in the space of a few years, the right to skiing.
Natural and artificial ice rinks allow ice hockey teams to train all year round. Figure skating as well as speed skating become possible in all seasons.
Some forty years after the celebration of the first winter games in Chamonix, it is to the city of Grenoble that falls the honor of setting up the organization of the 1968 Winter Olympic Games which will officially begin on February 6.
This is a definite tribute paid by the International Olympic Committee to the capital of the Alpine mountains. Thus, for thirteen days, nearly 2,300 participants from all over the world, by comparing their virtues in the Olympic tradition and spirit, will compete to deserve the symbolic olive crown.
If in Algeria, the practice of winter sports is relatively little known, there are, nevertheless, two resorts – Tikjda and Chréa – which allow ski enthusiasts to indulge in their favorite sport.
