Lagonosticta senegala senegala
Red Senegali or amaranth Lagonosticta senegala senegala
As its name suggests, this small 9 cm bird is native to Senegal.
Introduced in Tamanrasset, in Hoggar (Algeria), around 1940, Senegali has proliferated since then.
The Senegalese builds, in dense bushes, in hedges, in holes in walls, a globular nest pierced laterally with a flight hole.
The beauty of its plumage, pinkish red, brown and black, and its granivorous diet – it often feeds around and in houses, looking for grains of millet and husked rice – make it sought after by bird lovers.
