Mosaics Chariot of Neptune Timgad
Mosaic was very successful in the Roman Empire. It decorates the floors, but also the walls and vaults from the 1st century AD. BC and is found in homes as well as in public buildings.
It is made by pressing tesserae (cubic pieces made of various colored materials) into cement. The African mosaic school delivers polychrome pavements fragmented into panels designed to show several points of view.
Chariot of Neptune – Timgad
This mosaic dates back to the 3rd century. She was discovered in the great thermal baths of Timgad, in a frigidarium where cold baths were taken.
This fresco measures 3.50 m by 2.50 m. The central painting, with a white background, depicts four galloping sea horses carrying Neptune standing on his chariot.
His left hand holds the reins of his team, while his right brandishes the trident horizontally above the horses. A scarf floats behind him.
