National Achievements Industry
In May 1966, the Algerian government nationalized the mines, the management of which was entrusted to the National Company for Mining Research and Exploration (SONAREM).
In collaboration with friendly countries and within the framework of cooperation agreements, vast programs have been drawn up to promote research, diversify production and reconvert mines in the process of exhaustion.
Undertaken since 1964, this work has resulted, to date, in the discovery of deposits of iron, lead, zinc, copper, mercury, kaolin, etc.
After their discovery and with a view to their exploitation, these deposits are the subject of technical-economic studies carried out in parallel with the processing trials.
Today, SONAREM operates 21 mines and quarries. In 1968, the total tonnage marketed will be more than 4,757,500 tonnes of ore and 20,000 m2 of marble. SONAREM plays an important economic role in the industrialization of Algeria.
On the labor market, the mining sector employs 9,000 people.
