The Organization of African Unity decided to hold the 1st Pan-African Cultural Festival in Algiers, from July 21 to August 1, 1969.
This extraordinary meeting of arts and letters on the scale of an entire continent will be one of the summits of the cultural renaissance of the Third World in general and of Africa in particular.
It will allow both participants and observers to see that the African continent is not only the mecca of folklore, but also one of the cradles of great and old civilizations.
Aware of the importance of this event, Algeria had to prepare a work, organization and reception infrastructure that meets the aims of this festival.
To this end, a national commission was created. Its task is to coordinate all activities and bring together all the conditions so that Algeria can assume the mission that Africa has entrusted to it.
For the various shows, eight performance venues were selected. These are the National Theater, the Africa, Majestic, Colisée, Ibn Khaldoun, Annasser stadium, the Radio-Television auditorium and the Cinémathèque repertory room.
It was decided that each category of show takes place in the same stage location and that the jury always sits in the same place. In addition, a symposium open to all OAU member states and invited men of culture will be organized from July 22 to 31, 1969 on African culture, its realities, its role in the liberation struggle, in the consolidation of African unity and the economic and social development of Africa.
