Personalities
Emir Abdelkader maintained a true passion for horses. This exceptional figure for his qualities as a statesman, military strategist and ascetic endowed with remarkable spirituality also combined the prowess of an outstanding horseman, according to the descriptions given by the personalities who met him.
It is said that the Emir had a preference for black horses with a star on the forehead, light bays or copper chestnuts. According to other chroniclers of the time, “the saddle was his throne, so El Hadj Abdelkader on horseback was without equal among the Arabs who themselves are excellent horsemen.
The length and speed of his journeys are beyond imagination: more than once he has been seen traveling sixty leagues in the night or remaining sword in hand for seventy-two hours without setting foot on land. Fatigue and deprivation had no hold on him; often a handful of toasted wheat or figs was his only food during long days, in the midst of restless running and incessant fighting.
Emir Abdelkader contributed to the writing of a work entitled 'The Horses of the Sahara' which remains a true reference for all lovers of Barb or Arabian horses.
