In the richness of its diversity, the traditional Algerian costume is first distinguished among the Algerians by the elegant shape of its seroual. Held in place by buttons of gold thread, these pants which cover half the calf are often enhanced with embroidery.
The h’zam (belt), several meters long, wraps several times around the waist. The bust is wrapped in an ornate velvet or embroidered silk vest and the feet are shod in leather slippers.
Further south, in the Hauts Plateaux, on the borders of the Sahara, is Jebel Amour. Due to geographical isolation, clothing has retained its original originality. Women continue to wear the peplum. This antique draped garment is hung with a pair of silver fibulae, openwork and surrounded by serration.
At the base of this triangular-shaped b’zima, the barb. Generally, this jewel supports talismans called hrouz. Above the peplum, women wear a mantle woven from wool or cotton. The jewelry adorning the head has a special place in this southern region.
At the same time, the Aurasian tribes rejected any influence on clothing. The fibula peplum worn by the women of this region is the best witness to this. Elhaf des femmes chaouies has stood the test of time without any resistance, although with only one variation: fabric. Women have abandoned the woven wools inherited from the ancient era to fall under the charm and softness of cotton.
The burnous is the oldest and most practical clothing. The men of Orania drape it in their own way. Made of wool, this hooded cape which serves as a coat is worn with pride by the people of the region.
