Algiers embroidery
Embroidery in colored silks on cheesecloth, silk or canvas was the art of the women of Algiers par excellence during the three centuries of Turkish presence.
Executed on a low loom, where the fabric is stretched horizontally, the embroidery stitches are of different types:
the m’alqa (upholstered) or diagonal stitch;
the zelilej (small earthenware tile) or star point;
the m’nezzel (aligned) or stitch forming thin braids;
the m’terha (quilted) where the tablecloth of stretched silks is punctuated, from distance to distance, by points which hold it to the fabric.
For color, we distinguish between predominantly purple embroidery and predominantly blue and red embroidery.
