On July 19, 1970, Mr. President of the Revolutionary Council and head of government laid the first stone of the new port of Skikda. On September 23, 1972, the new port was officially opened to navigation by the Minister of Public Works and Construction. On September 29, 1972, the Hassi R'mel, an Algerian LNG carrier, docked and carried out the first loading of liquefied natural gas produced by the plant located upstream.
These different dates illustrate each stage of the construction of a work that has become a main element serving the Algerian economy. Constituting in itself a development pole for the east of the country, the new port of Skikda is the normal outlet for an entire industrial zone whose products, both raw and refined, are exported from its installations.
The protective structures include a main pier 1,730 m long and a secondary pier 670 m long. They shelter a body of water where the turning circle is 550 m. Several specialized wharves are built there.
The construction of this complex, which meets the needs of a very specialized industrial zone, mobilized enormous resources and required modern methods, thus allowing rapid progress.
As an indication, the volumes of materials used are of the order of 5,000,000 tonnes of riprap for the protection of the jetties, 300,000 m3 of concrete for all the superstructures, 6,000,000 m3 of dredged sand including 2,000,000 m3 dumped on land to improve the land in the industrial zone, 10,000 tons of reinforcing steel.
An effective instrument for implementing a development policy, the new port of Skikda will enable a new boom in Algeria's foreign trade.
