Maghreb PTT Coordination Committee
In accordance with the terms of the Tangier memorandum of understanding, dated November 28, 1964, signed by the Council of Ministers of the Maghreb Economy, a commission of experts met in Tunis on April 2, 1965 to study the possibilities of harmonization and extension of Maghreb relations in terms of posts and telecommunications.
At the conclusion of its work, this commission recommended the creation of a Maghreb Post and Telecommunications Coordination Committee (CMCPT).
A specialized body of a larger institution, the Permanent Consultative Committee of the Maghreb, the CMCPT, was officially created in Tunis in 1965.
Its main objectives are: planning implementation programs in the fields of posts and telecommunications; harmonization of the structure and operation of telecommunications networks; the unification of management and operating methods in terms of posts and telecommunications.
The first ordinary and constitutive session of the CMCTP took place in Tunis in 1965, the second in Tripoli in 1968 and the third in Rabat in 1970.
The fourth session was held in Algiers from December 3 to 8, 1973. Important decisions were taken during this 4th session.
In the field of posts and financial services, they relate in particular to the unification of pricing and the simplification of operating rules.
In terms of telecommunications, they concern the reduction of tariffs, the construction of high-capacity transmission arteries and the automation of certain connections from 1974.
Finally, in the area of training, an exchange of information and use by member countries of existing structures are planned.
The Maghreb Post and Telecommunications Coordination Committee thus plays an important role in inter-Maghreb relations and makes a considerable contribution to the promotion of Maghrebi trade and the economic development of the Maghreb entity.
