November 1, 1974 confirmed, 20 years after the outbreak of the 1954 Revolution, the principles which led the Algerians to rise up against the colonial forces and to wrest Algeria's independence through a fierce struggle.
Algeria's desire from independence to establish the sovereignty of the State and to impose itself on the international scene is expressed with unshakeable conviction, particularly through the non-aligned movement.
The Algerian state acts as the voice of third world countries wishing to assert their vision of the world and to work to protect their natural resources long monopolized by colonialism.
Algeria, which had just nationalized its hydrocarbons two years earlier, remains committed to the necessary control of the functioning of the economy. This was reaffirmed on September 9, 1973, by President Houari Boumediène in his speech at the Conference of Non-Aligned Countries:
“International economic cooperation can only gain lasting momentum if it is based on the principle of effective and concrete sovereignty of developing countries, over their natural resources and on the principle of control, by these countries, of the functioning of their economy. Firstly, it concerns the effective control of each State over the exploitation of its natural resources, which implies the right to nationalization.
The conference highlighted the need to strengthen solidarity and cooperation between non-aligned countries, in order to strengthen their capacity to resist exploitation and economic aggression. (…)
The conference spoke out in support of all those fighting for the recovery of their national resources. (…)
Relying on oneself thus appears to be the necessary consequence, on the economic level, of the policy of non-alignment.
The anniversary of the outbreak of the armed struggle for the recovery of independence is an opportunity to return to the very sources of the aspirations of the Algerian people to become masters of their destiny.
