Oratory of the Madrasa of Sidi Boumedienne in Tlemcen
The Madrasa of Tlemcen
From the 12th to the 15th centuries, Tlemcen became the city of scholars, the city of numerous madrassahs where some of the most famous professors in the Arab world of the time taught.
It was for the ancient Algerian city the radiant era of schools which attracted the greatest masters.
Both temples of knowledge and places of prayer, they were nurseries of educated people and mystical scholars.
These madrassahs were often as beautiful as the palaces, such was the respect and worship of knowledge.
It was to the madrassah of El Eubbad, near the Sidi Boumediène mosque, that Ibn Khaldoun retired for a time. “I went to the madrassah of the holy Sheikh Boumediène, wanting to escape the worries of worldly affairs and devote myself to study.”
Restored by the historic monuments service, this madrassah remains a precious monument of cultural heritage.
