Palace of the Dey of Algiers
In 1817, Dey Ali Khodja established the seat of government of the Regency of El Djazaïr in the Citadel Palace.
Located at the highest point of the city, the Citadel included a group of military buildings whose construction dates back to the 16th century.
At the front door of the Dey's palace, we can still see a heavy chain hanging in the shape of an anchor below the awning.
Once you have crossed the threshold, you have access to two richly decorated sqifas (vestibules) which overlook a large courtyard paved with marble and decorated with a basin.
It is on the edge of this courtyard that the Divan room is located where the Dey administered justice and granted his audiences.
The famous scene known as the “fan blow” took place in this room between Dey Hussein and the French consul Deval.
This important historical monument is currently the subject of major restoration and development work to become the Museum of El Djazaïr and old Algiers.
