Election of the President Mr. Houari Boumedienne
Election of Mr. Houari Boumediène as President of the Democratic and People's Republic of Algeria
The Algerian people have just elected President Houari Boumediène, candidate of the National Liberation Front, to the supreme office. When proposing this candidacy, Mr. Mohamed Chérif Messaâdia, head of the party's orientation and information department, delivered a speech of which here is an extract:
“Fate wanted us to experience these historic moments of the march of our victorious Revolution and the life of our nation so rich in glorious events. Our people, who knew how to give the best image of resurrection and liberation in the current era, are today experiencing an event which will be among the most significant historical facts in the march of the generation of November 1, 1954, this generation of militants who, by surpassing themselves, defeated the occupier, supported with a spirit of revolutionary continuity the evils of war and the difficulties of independence. They laid the foundations for the construction of socialist society, thanks to decisive radical measures born from the clear vision of objectives, the healthy appreciation of the objective circumstances of the country and the unwavering political will which was the result of the fruitful experience lived during the War of National Liberation or during the struggle for economic development, social and cultural transformations. The defense of the achievements of the Revolution requires that secure and solid bases be given to institutions, bases that do not collapse with the departure of men. This has been the method followed since the Revolutionary Recovery of June 19, 1965. Since that date, not a day has passed without significant victories being registered, whether on the internal or external level, thanks to the wise policy applied by the revolutionary power under the direction of our brother Houari Boumediène who enjoys a powerful faith, a considerable experience acquired by living the Revolution as one of its avant-garde djounoud, its remarkable leaders, thanks also to his commitment to the principles and objectives of the National Liberation Front and his sensitivity to the problems of the working masses. And how could it not be so when we probed it during the darkest and most difficult era that the development of the armed struggle has known, to which it gave a new breath likely to put an end to the factors of divergence imposed by the circumstances of the war and the ferocity of the enemy. He unified the army to which he ensured training and progress. His work made him the guarantor of the unity of the mujahideen, the preventive shield and the barrier against greed. At the head of the revolutionary command, Boumediène was able to make the Algerian Revolution a sincere voice expressing the aspirations of the peoples of the Third World for liberation from colonialism and neocolonialism. Considering the revolutionary criteria, clear and precise, contained in the National Charter regarding the supreme responsibilities in the State and the party. Given that the fundamental choice requires a revolutionary power firm in principles and effective in style, the National Liberation Front Party, out of loyalty to its sons, responding to the will of its militants reflecting the popular will, chooses an activist among its own for what he represents in terms of commitment to principles, competence in management, sincerity in life in order to propose him to the Algerian people for the presidency of the democratic and popular Algerian Republic. There is no one more appropriate than the one who proved in critical moments and crucial hours his loyalty to the Revolution and the people: the activist Houari Boumediène.”
