The Almohads Al Mouahhidûn (1125-1248)
The Almohad movement was born in opposition to the Almoravid dynasty considered corrupt and accused of anthropomorphism in religious matters.
Relying on rigorous religious dogmatism, the Almohads (unitarian) will for the first time in the history of the Maghreb bring together North Africa, from Agadir to Tripoli, under a common authority and stop the progress of the Reconquista in Spain; Abd El Mou'min, Abou Yaâkoub, Abu Youssouf were among the most prestigious sovereigns of this dynasty.
In the field of currency, the Almohads innovated a lot.
Indeed, Mohammed Ibn Toumert, founder and spiritual leader of this movement, gave the silver coins, called “dirhams”, the square shape.
It was the same for the coins of a half dirham, a quarter of a dirham, an eighth of a dirham and a sixteenth of a dirham.
As for the gold dinars and double dinars, they are distinguished from the previous coins by the square which is inscribed in a determining circle as well as by four segments of equal circles.
