Almoravid Dinar 11th century
The Almoravids Al Mûrabitûn (1056-1147)
The Almoravids or Al Mûrabitûn (religious sect), originally settled on the shores of Senegal, were remarkable warriors.
They managed to extend their Islamization campaign to all countries south of the Sahara.
Under the command of Youssouf Ibn Tachfin, they conquered a large part of the Maghreb and thanks to the victory of Zallaqa in 1086, they imposed their authority on Spain.
In the artistic field, the Almoravids were great builders (mosques of Nedroma, Tlemcen and Algiers).
Thanks to the control of trans-Saharan trade, the Almoravids undertook the manufacture of a large number of gold coins, called “dinars”, which are characterized by a regular and high quality minting.
