Among the five pillars of Islam is the pilgrimage to the Holy House of Allah. It is an obligation of divine institution incumbent on all Muslims who can go there at least once in their life.
The pilgrimage is the dream, the consecration of the religious life of the believer. We make considerable sacrifices for him although it is only strictly obligatory if we are able to accomplish it.
The pilgrimage solemnly concretizes the solidarity of the Umma (Muslim community). The pilgrimage period begins on the first choual and lasts until the end of dhou el hidja.
The wish in the life of every Muslim is to go on pilgrimage to the Kaaba. The foundations of this were laid by Ibrahim and his son Ismail for thousands of years. Tainted by polytheism, Islam purified it and transformed it into a holy place for Muslims.
The Kaaba rises to 15 m. Its surface area is 12 m x 10.1 m and is supported internally by three pillars. It is covered externally with a black fabric engraved in gold.
At the northern corner is the black stone laid by the Prophet (QSSSL) when it was redeveloped by Qureïch, five years before the Message. The Karamaths tore it away in 317 AH and returned it in 339 AH.
The Kaaba is surrounded by the largest and most famous mosque in Islam. The latest developments of this mosque were undertaken by Al Saud since the year 1375 AH. It can accommodate 300,000 people and has 23 gates and 7 minarets. In the middle of the mosque is Bir Zemzem.
