Road to African Unity
The realization of the road to African Unity, which had for a long time been only a dream for all of Africa, is not due to chance and is not an act of circumstance.
It is a natural consequence of the policy practiced by the revolutionary power which materialized through the liquidation of regional disparities on the national level and through rapprochement, in all its forms, with African States.
Thus, the Sahara benefited from the first special program within the framework of the regional balance policy and experienced new perspectives in the field of promoting social life, thus managing to emerge from isolation to contribute to the life of the entire nation.
The road to African Unity draws its true meaning from the creation of real cooperation between African countries in the cultural, commercial, industrial and agricultural fields within the framework of economic complementarity.
Added to this is cooperation with the aim of promoting Africa and achieving African unity. This road therefore constitutes one of the greatest aspirations of the Algerian Revolution.
Construction work on the African Unity road by young people from the National Service began on September 16, 1971 in the presence of President Houari Boumediène.
The launch took place in El Goléa before arriving in In Salah, through the sand dunes, over a distance of 420 km, then going towards Tamanrasset, the capital of Hoggar, crossing the Erg region where the mountain ranges and difficult passes begin, a total of 1,120 km.
The first section, El-Goléa-In Salah, was inaugurated in June 1973, while the second, In Salah-Tamanrasset, was inaugurated on June 19, 1978. 60 km south of Tamanrasset, the road takes two directions: towards the borders of Mali (469 km) and towards those of Niger (357 km).
The construction of the African Unity Road was one of the first tasks entrusted to the National Service. Added to the others, it reflects the commitment of our youth and their effective participation in the development of the country and the building of socialism.
