International Year of the Child
The year 1979 was proclaimed the International Year of the Child by the 31st session of the United Nations. 1979 also marks the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
During this year, emphasis will be placed on some particularly urgent needs of children in the areas of education, social protection, health and nutrition.
The organized actions may take multiple forms. They will consist of information and explanation actions so that all of humanity is made aware of childhood problems, which augurs well for a better tomorrow for all children, innocent victims in distress.
We only need to refer to recent history to see that during conflicts that shake entire regions of the globe, it is the child who is the first to suffer the painful torments and often irremediable trauma.
The situations that darken the future of childhood are not only those in periods of war, but also those in times of peace and which result in exploitation, illiteracy, discrimination, disease and malnutrition.
If we were to talk about childhood in Algeria, we would see that the Algerian state spares no effort to contribute to the development and protection of children. The rates achieved by schooling could in themselves be the dynamic indicator of the whole series of actions deployed in this direction, without counting the free school supplies, healthcare, the generalization of canteens in schools, the multiplication of summer camp centers, the already obvious breakthrough made by cultural and sports activities.
Childhood is universal. This is why adults and children around the world must, regardless of race, creed, gender or political opinion, unite to act to improve the lot of children.
