The Hegira of the Prophet (QSSSL) from Mecca to Medina marks the beginning of Muslim history. When the enemies of Islam decided to assassinate him by besieging his residence, the Prophet (QSSSL), accompanied by Abu Bakr Essedik, left his home on the night of the month of Rabie el Aouel and took refuge in a cave in Jebel Thour, south of Mecca.
The enemies relentlessly pursued the Prophet (QSSSL) until the entrance of the cave. But God came to his aid by sheltering him from his pursuers and allowing him to continue his journey to Medina.
After three days of walking, on the 12th of Rabie el Aouel, he entered this city where the sympathizers (ançar) gave him a triumphant welcome.
From the hegira of the Prophet (QSSSL) in Medina, Islam was able to have a capital, a structured state, a nation applying Islamic legislation and a powerful army protecting the call to Islam and enforcing order.
Islam was completed during ten years of spiritual and material struggle. After the conquest of Mecca, the entire peninsula rallied to Islam.
These successes were possible as a result of the Hegira and the protection of the Prophet (QSSSL). Also, the companions of the Prophet (QSSSL) unanimously decided to consider the Hijra as the beginning of the history of Islam.
It was on the 9th of the month of Dhou el Hija of the 10th year of the Hegira, at Jebel Arafat, during the farewell pilgrimage, that the last verses of the Koran were revealed. The soul of the Prophet Muhammad (QSSSL) was called back to God at the age of 63 on the 12th of Rabie el Aouel of the 11th year of the Hegira.
He was buried in Medina. The first caliph elected for his succession was Abu Bakr Essedik, then it was successively Omar, Othman and Ali.
In the year 27 AH, thanks to the companions of the Prophet (QSSSL) and the faithful, Islam penetrated the Arab Maghreb, the conquest of which took place later. All the inhabitants converted to Islam and became among its most valiant defenders.
Since then, the history of our people has been linked to that of Islam.
