Castor oil Ricinus communis (Arabic: kharoua’)
From the Euphorbiaceae family, the castor oil plant is a shrub with large palmate-lobed leaves with seven or nine lobes, lanceolate with an inflorescence in an erect terminal panicle and formed of several clusters of males at the base and females at the top.
Its seeds are the size of a bean.
They are covered in a very hard integument, marbled with yellow and brown and equipped with a wattle.
This species is quite common in Northern Algeria even in the Sahara (Hoggar).
It is a medicinal plant, but also ornamental.
From the seeds, a purgative oil is extracted, used in pharmacy and the plastics industry.
