Béjaia before 1830
Béjaïa was founded by the Carthaginians to establish a trading post there.
The Romans then made it a military base, before the Vandals, led by King Gaiseric, occupied it in the 5th century and surrounded it with fortifications.
Taken over by the Berbers, it became, in 1062, the capital of the Hammadite dynasty.
In 1509, it fell under Spanish occupation, before being recaptured by the Ottomans in 1555.
