This powerful hunter is a large migrator widespread in the Mediterranean and on the eastern coasts of the Atlantic.
It is a pelagic fish, gregarious and a very good swimmer.
Its food consists of sardines and anchovies which it hunts relentlessly.
Its size exceeds 2 m and its weight can reach 500 kg; its maximum age is 15 years.
Very common in Algerian waters, it is caught by line, trap and accidentally by trawl.
Tuna is a very valuable fish due to its fatty, red flesh, which is very nutritious and much appreciated.
Most of the catch is processed for canning.
