n its resolution 40/20 of 1985, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) highlighted the framework for cooperation with the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
This resolution highlights:
“Noting in particular the Declaration on the Economic Situation in Africa and the Priority Program for Economic Recovery in Africa 1986-1990 annexed thereto, adopted by the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity at its twenty-first session, devoted mainly to the critical economic situation in Africa (…);
- Seriously concerned by the alarming worsening of the economic situation in Africa (...).
- Welcomes the efforts that the Organization of African Unity continues to make to promote multilateral cooperation among African States and to find solutions to African problems of vital importance to the international community, and notes with satisfaction that various United Nations bodies are taking an increasing part in these efforts;
- Reaffirms that the United Nations is determined to work in close collaboration with the Organization of African Unity towards the establishment of the new international economic order in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and, in this regard, to take full account of the Lagos Plan of Action (...), when implementing the International Development Strategy for the Third Decade of the United Nations for Development (...);
- Also urges all Member States and regional and international organizations (...) to give their full support to the Priority Program for African Economic Recovery 1986-1990.”
