The palm tree is one of those plant species that have always inspired poets. A natural decorative element or nourishing tree with its fruits, the palm dates back to the most ancient times.
Chroniclers, historians, men of letters and painters mention it in laudatory terms in their works. Its size, its high and straight trunk or in bundles, the freshness and the shade it provides have made the palm tree a faithful and pleasant companion of man.
The palm tree presents a wide variety with a certain charm and very real usefulness for humans. Spreading the vast expanse of the desert, it offers its palm groves, its colors, its light rustling like a tree of peace for the inhabitants of the southern regions.
At its foot, water and earth become one entity to give birth to beautiful gardens. In the Mediterranean regions, it lines avenues and boulevards, decorates parks and gardens and gives towns and villages a presence and a note of cheerfulness, reminding the city dweller of the sweetness so sung by poets.
The palm tree lives long when man protects it from the vicissitudes of time. It is indeed a substantial and permanent resource for those who are willing to give it some attention. The palm tree is also a factor of ecological balance in the regions where it thrives, in the sense that it allows other species to perpetuate themselves and man to carry out his agricultural activity.
Research is currently being carried out by public authorities to protect and exploit this plant species. Palm fibers and fruits are also used in many industries and craft activities. But its main wealth is the date with 82 varieties including the famous Deglet Nour, highly sought after on international markets.
Many efforts are being made to develop our palm groves and their profitability for the benefit of the national economy and those who ensure the development of this natural resource. Majestic, proud, loaded with nourishing benefits and aesthetic virtues, the palm tree deserves even more care and consideration from men.
