Mexico 86 - Football World Cup
The 13th edition of the FIFA World Cup will take place from May 31 to June 29, 1986 in Mexico. The biggest football celebration, a quadrennial event awaited around the world, returns sixteen years later to the country which in 1970 hosted what specialists consider to be the most beautiful and spectacular World Cup in history. For almost a month, twenty-four national selections will compete for the prestigious trophy.
Algeria will be present at this edition and will constitute one of the most anticipated and feared selections after its very honorable performances at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Performances which had led the selections of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and Austria to resort to an arrangement in order to eliminate Algeria, so much so that FIFA made a significant modification to the regulations: from the 1986 World Cup, the last matches of the same group must take place at the same time in order to avoid possible arrangements.
Algeria and Morocco, the two representatives of Africa, will ensure the emergence of African football in general and the Maghreb in particular on the international football scene. It was Colombia that was responsible for organizing this final phase of the World Cup, but economic constraints forced this country to give it up.
This edition being promised to the American continent, the International Football Federation (FIFA) entrusted the organization to Mexico at its request. Despite the tight deadlines, the country of the Aztecs rose to the challenge to be on time, relying on the passion of the Mexican people for football. Even the tragedy experienced by the country on September 19, 1985 with the earthquake that struck Mexico City, causing tens of thousands of victims and significant material damage, did not alter the enthusiasm of the Mexicans and their desire to successfully organize this major football event.
