Door of the Sidi Boumedienne Mosque
Door of the Sidi Boumediène mosque – Tlemcen
It was in 1339 (739 AH) that Sultan Abou Al Hassan built the El Eubbad mosque as an annex to the tomb of Sidi Boumediène, thereby demonstrating his piety for the great Andalusian mystic.
The porch of this mosque is prestigious. A large horseshoe-shaped arcade exceeding 7 m and 3 m wide frames the door.
In the rectangle which overlaps it, arabesques in white, brown, green and yellow earthenware intertwine, above a band of mosaics unrolls an inscription as a dedication: “Praise to the one God. The erection of this mosque was ordered by our master the sultan servant of God, Ali, son of our lord sultan Abu Said Othman, son of (...), may God strengthen him and grant him His help. In the year 739 (1339).”
Dominating the epigraphic ribbon, a frieze of 5 rosettes whose center is an octagonal star and which join each other by means of chevrons arranged on four vertical bands.
At approximately 2 m from the ground, the interior faces of the porch are crisscrossed with arabesques. A heavy cedar door, with two leaves, covered with bronze blades, separates the vestibule from the oratory of this venerable mosque.
