Having become famous in the world of rock art specialists, the engraving, known under the name Bélier de Boualem, is found in the commune of Boualem, a locality located halfway between El Bayadh and Aflou.
Engraved on a vertical sandstone wall, the figure represents a ram measuring 1.50 m in height. The animal is drawn in relative profile, limbs joined two by two.
The wavy lines represent the hair. The eye is carefully outlined, while the head, with a bumpy muzzle and topped by a spheroid, is extended by a fringed cheek pendant, toothed on one of the edges.
It is decorated with curved twigs which could be feathers or branches. Part of the neck is polished, the absence of hair in this area may suggest shearing.
The ram is adorned with a collar decorated with a chevron to which a scalloped line is attached which highlights the withers and the spine. As for the ornaments and attributes it wears, they attest not only that this animal was domesticated, but that it was perhaps the object of a cult.
