Zaggar Rock Engravings
Located inside a wall forming part of two rocks, this engraving forms a vault belonging to the site of Dir Eddegaouen, not far from the village of Zaccar, near Djelfa.
It represents an ancient hartebeest measuring 76.50 cm, struck down by a lion.
The outline of the hartebeest is of exceptional quality. The smallest physical details of the animal, perfectly rendered, show the mastery of the engraver and his knowledge of anatomy.
The lion's outline is more summary. He is much smaller than his victim. It measures 80 cm with the tail (dotted).
But we recognize a male lion by his massive head, the raised mane emphasizing his victory. The paws, claws out, are outstretched.
The ends of the hind leg and the tail, pitted, have not received their final polishing. The figure is overloaded in the middle by a more recent engraving representing an ostrich.
