The idea of the Mediterranean Games, launched during the London Olympics in 1948, by the president of the Egyptian National Olympic Committee, was immediately adopted.
The first games began three years later, in 1951, in Alexandria. Then the Mediterranean flame was transmitted successively to Barcelona in 1955, to Beirut in 1959, to Naples in 1963, to Tunis in 1967, to Izmir in 1971, to Algiers in 1975, to Split in 1979, and to Casablanca in 1983.
Latakia, from September 11 to 25, 1987, will bring together the Mediterranean sporting elite. To respond, the sporting youth of seventeen Mediterranean countries will meet, once again, under the sign of friendship and fraternity and Latakia will be, for two weeks, the capital of the Mediterranean Basin.
There are 5,000 athletes who will run the 18 disciplines included in the program. Latakia will thus celebrate the 10th anniversary of the holding of the Mediterranean games which will certainly not fail to make their contribution to improving the level of all participants.
