Road Achievements Highways
Algeria has a well-connected and paved road network covering 100,000 linear kilometers. As for the railway network, it extends over 4,000 kilometers. These communication infrastructures are located, for the most part, along the coast and serve the main cities of the country. They are sometimes dilapidated and above all remain insufficient in relation to the ever-increasing needs of both automobile traffic and economic activity.
East-west traffic, which uses the axis located to the north, is starting to experience congestion. To counter this state of affairs, it was decided, as part of the 1980-1984 five-year plan, to launch work on an East-West highway. The objective is to make traffic more fluid for road users and to provide the means for Maghreb economic construction and, by extension, to promote the development of relations between the Maghreb and Europe.
It is therefore a question of completing the implementation of transport infrastructure projects planned since the end of the 1970s. Major projects are designed and certain projects programmed for the construction, renewal or modernization of this sector.
This is the case for the 55 km of the Bordj Bou-Arréridj-M’sila railway line and the 68 km of the Aïn M’lila-Oum El Bouaghi line. A substantial envelope has been allocated to these infrastructure projects considered to be priorities.
The sectoral program reflects the firm desire of the public authorities to open up the Hauts Plateaux region thanks to a series of connections linking medium-sized and small towns to the rail network.
Furthermore, the goods lines will make it possible to develop the activity of the Bir El Ater phosphate complex, the Elma Labiod cement plant, the Bellara phosphoric acid complex and many other economic activities.
