75th Anniversary of the Arab Scout Movement
Like the Arab world, Algeria is commemorating this year the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Arab Scout Movement. Founded jointly in Lebanon and Syria in 1912, the Scout movement immediately developed in Palestine, Egypt and then Iraq.
In 1924, the scout movement was placed under Arab aegis. It was integrated into the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) in 1954. An independent educational organization, the Arab Scout Movement is essentially based on the educational principle established by Baden-Powell, while respecting the traditional values of the Arab social environment.
The Arab Scout Movement offers its members throughout 1988 participation in national and international camps in nature and voluntary and humanitarian activities. Made up of several representative bodies of Arab scouting and national delegates, the movement's mission is to promote its principles on the national and international levels and the spirit of belonging and fraternity between members, as well as the implementation of the recommendations resulting from the congresses.
The Arab Scout Movement, whose main strength is unity and integrity, will contribute to the design of programs and projects for youth, development and cooperation with other international organizations. The first international congress of Arab Scouts took place in Syria in 1954. The event, which brought together nearly forty Arab delegations, was under the banner of “Promoting the development tools of the scout movement in Arab countries”. Two years later, the second congress, which brought together members of Arab scouting in Cairo, saw the creation of the first Arab Scout Bureau.
The creation of the scout movement in Algeria dates back to the mid-1930s. It is represented by the Foundation of Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA), initiated by the shahid Mohamed Bouras.
