The magot monkey, an endangered species, is affected by this measure. Every year, hundreds of baby goods are seized by customs around the world. These animals undergo trauma that subsequently affects their behavior, as these seizures can last more than 20 days during which the monkeys wait in a one-square-meter cage. The major problem is that it is difficult to accommodate them by organizations which rarely have space for these animals. Especially since these animals reproduce well in captivity, which means that zoological parks which have groups of animals already have many.
In addition, most of the time, they are alone animals and therefore difficult to reintroduce into a group. Generally, they are euthanized. A protection plan has been drawn up by specialists who propose:
- carry out a real information campaign on the hoarded monkey to raise public awareness;
- make these animals and their way of life known in schools through educational courses, teaching students to respect and protect them;
- toughen the law concerning them and very severely punish any trafficking in these animals;
- develop an ecotourism program to obtain funds;
- strictly prohibit the sale of these animals;
- set up teams specializing in the protection of assets.
As for the reintroduction plan, it consists of a territoriality declared a “natural reserve” where the monkeys would be protected against poaching by people who master the field of species protection and the biology of monkeys.
