The Hassi R'Mel deposit is the largest natural gas deposit in Algeria and the African continent, discovered in 1956 by the French Algeria Oil Company, in a Triassic formation, the deposit still represents a quarter of the country's gas production. About half of its initial reserves (estimated at 2,400 billion cubic meters) would be exhausted. The facilities built around Hassi R'Mel are the hub of the Algerian gas industry: in addition to the production of the field itself, they centralize gas produced in other regions of Algeria, such as the associated gas of Hassi Messaoud.

Hassi R'mel natural gas is rich in condensates. To maximize total recovery, part of the “dry” gas (after extraction of the condensates) is reinjected into the reservoir. This practice results in a reduction in the condensate/gas ratio in the long term. Gas from Hassi R'Mel is also injected into surrounding oil fields, to improve oil recovery.
