Land, even today, remains, in addition to the intensive development of other sources and forms of wealth, a significant potential for resources and the future. Agriculture benefits from major interest resulting in measures to encourage production and investment. Food self-sufficiency, among the conditions for economic independence, is at the center of all efforts internally and constitutes a major challenge externally.
If Algeria, traditionally an exporter of fruits and vegetables, has seen its useful agricultural area per capita drop by 60% since 1962 and if the climatic conditions experienced by the country have contributed to widening the gap between a limited supply and a strong demand for a decade, the consumption of fresh vegetables has almost doubled.
Potatoes and tomatoes remain the favorite products of Algerians, constituting nearly 50% of fresh vegetable consumption. In addition to the development of hydraulics, science and technology in agriculture, the protection of agricultural land and the development of land are the subject of extensive incentive and encouragement actions to improve agricultural potential and meet the needs of the economy and society.
The rural world and agricultural activity are affected by development programs, in order to restore the land to its rightful place in the process of national development and the consolidation of the economic independence of the nation. The challenge for this sector for the year 2000 proves difficult, but not insurmountable.
