Caretta caretta caretta (Turtle)

Flattened heart-shaped shell. Head quite long and very broad with two pairs of prefrontal plates and a powerful horny beak; five pairs of side plates. The anterior pair abuts the precentral plate. Coloring: The upper surface is reddish brown with light spots; pale yellow plastron with diffuse orange spots. Habitat: Often lives in deep water, but is also found near shores. Can migrate long distances to spawning grounds or food sources. Diet: Predominantly carnivorous, the turtle feeds on molluscs, crustaceans, fish and jellyfish. Eggs considered a treat; tasty flesh; sought-after shell and scales.
