Battle of Bir el Gharama 1881 The French sent a discovery mission under the cover of scientific research led by Colonel Flatters with the aim of French penetration into southern Algeria. The Tuareg leaders, Sheikh Amoud Ben El-Mokhtar and Sheikh Ahi Taghl fought the battle of Bir El Gharama against the French enemy in 1881 during which Colonel Flatters was killed. And for a long time colonial expansion was stopped in southern Algeria.
