Almoravid Dinar, 11th Century
During the Islamic era, Arab currency in Africa was, at the beginning, similar in design to the Byzantine style in the choice of metal, shapes or engraving. Under the reign of Abdelmalek Ben Merouane (685-705), notable changes were made to the currency, notably the Arabization of the characters. Subsequently, all nations adopted styles specific to their currencies. It was the same for the Almoravids who undertook the manufacture of a large number of gold coins and whose style was distinguished by elegant Kufi characters. The coins, called “dinars”, are characterized by a regular and high quality minting.
