Mediterranean Games of Algiers 75

The award of the organization of the 7th Mediterranean Games in 1975 in Algiers denotes the confidence of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (CIJM) in Algeria's abilities to live up to this great event. The participation of Algerians in the 1967 Mediterranean Games in Tunis – the first sporting gathering in which Algeria participated with a significant number of athletes – encouraged the capital's authorities to apply to host the games. Eager to assert Algeria's presence on the international sporting scene and demonstrate our country's capacity to organize major sporting events, the Council of the Revolution and the government supported Algiers' candidacy, offering all the guarantees for an organization worthy of the greatness of Algeria. Algiers' candidacy was submitted in 1968 to the International Committee for Mediterranean Games. The commission examining the applications judged the Algiers file to be very reliable, because it met all the technical criteria, in addition to being supported by the highest authorities of the Algerian state. The project to build an Olympic city of international level, including in particular a large stadium for football and athletics, a sports palace, fields for team sports and several swimming pools, convinced the commission of the political will of the Algerian authorities to make this event a success and give it all the importance it deserves. The members of the general assembly of the International Mediterranean Games Committee, meeting in 1969, elected Algiers by a large majority, confirming their confidence in the organizational capacities of Algeria whose leading role in the Mediterranean Basin, whether politically, economically or diplomatically, is unanimously appreciated. Since then, preparations have gone well and Algiers is adorned with its finest attire to be, this year, the capital of the Mediterranean.
