Mustapha Kateb
Mustapha Kateb was born in Souk Ahras on July 8, 1920. At the age of 18, he started with radio theater and created, in the early 1940s, his professional troupe El Masrah which later became Masrah El Djazaïr. It was in the same years that Mustapha Kateb, in the company of Mahieddine Bachtarzi and other actors, breathed new life into Algerian theater. From 1958 to 1962, Mustapha Kateb was appointed permanent leader of the FLN troop which succeeded in transmitting the message of the struggle of the Algerian people throughout the world. In 1963, he became the first director of the Algerian National Theater (TNA), and this until 1972. In the meantime, he created, in 1965, the National Institute of Dramatic and Choreographic Art (INADC) of Bordj El Kiffan (Algiers) which trained numerous actors and actresses. He held the position of technical advisor in charge of cultural activities at the Ministry of Higher Education in 1973. In August 1988, he again directed the Algerian National Theater. Mustapha Kateb has played different roles on television and in cinema. He died on October 28, 1989.
