Chamaeleo vulgaris (Chameleon)
It is an arboreal and insectivorous saurian whose body is very laterally flattened. Its head, quite distinct from the rest of the body, has a characteristic helmet-shaped crest on the posterior part. Its protruding eyes can move independently of each other. Its limbs are adapted to arboreal life: they form a sort of pincers, because the fingers can be opposed in two groups. The common chameleon lives in the Maghreb, Western Asia and the Mediterranean islands. It is remarkable for its color changes which allow it to blend in with the environment, making it almost invisible. Its movements are slow and its long protractile tongue – which can be stretched forward – allows it to mainly hunt insects.
